Join us for a day of creative play with Author/Illustrator Carter Higgins (Circle, Under, Berry • Chronicle books) and Senior Designer/Illustrator Erica DeChavez (HarperCollins).   This event will take place on Saturday, May 14th from 10am-4:30pm.  Participate virtually via Zoom or in-person at the University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum, the world’s largest collection of original artwork by children’s illustrators. Optional portfolio and manuscript reviews will be available for an additional fee.

Whether you are an author or an illustrator, or just looking for a day of creative play, this event is for you! Please be prepared to get messy as we will be working with paper, paint, scissors, and glue. Materials will be provided for those attending in-person at the Mazza Museum.

Registration opens April 3rd at 7pm ET) & closes for in person attendees May 11th.

*What is a hybrid event you might ask?
Our featured guests will be presenting virtually over Zoom from their respective locations which allows us to broadcast them both on the big screen at the Mazza Museum, for our in person participants, and at home for our virtual participants.

FREE for current SCBWI members but registration is required for virtual and *in-person.
$10 fee for all non-members attending virtually or *in-person.
$50 per virtual portfolio or written manuscript critiques. *Critique spots are now open to all registered SCBWI members. If full, Please email Illustrator Coordinator Merrill Rainey ( to be added to the wait list.

Virtual 20-minute portfolio reviews with Erica DeChavez

Sunday, May 15th • Scheduling reviews between 10am-2pm
Cost is $50 (SCBWI members only)
Erica reviews both illustration portfolios, picture book, board book, illustrated chapter books, and graphic novel dummies.  To make sure Erica has ample time to review your work, all critique materials are due no later than Saturday, May 7th.  If submitting a book dummy, please only submit one.  Upload directions will be emailed specifically to those who purchase a critique with Erica.

Manuscript or picture book dummy written-only critiques from Carter Higgins
Submit manuscript/dummy by Friday, May 13th  
Cost is $50 (SCBWI members only)
Carter reviews both picture book manuscripts and picture book dummies and will provide written-only feedback.  Materials are due no later than Friday, May 13th. Upload directions will be emailed specifically to those who pay for a critique with Carter.  All written feedback will be emailed directly to you after June 2nd.


Carter Higgins is the author of many books for young readers, including Everything You Need for a Treehouse, an NPR Best Book of the Year, This is Not a Valentine, a Kids’ Indie Next List selection, and the chapter book series, Audrey L & Audrey W: Best Friends-ish. Her first book as both author and illustrator, Circle Under Berry, was named a Best Book of 2021 by Publisher’s Weekly, Smithsonian Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal.

Carter is a creative storyteller who designs playful experiences around visual literacy and believes the wit of kids’ language is the best poetry of all. She is an Emmy-winning visual effects and motion graphics artist and spent a decade as an elementary school librarian.

Erica De Chavez is a Filipino-American children’s book designer by day for HarperCollins Publishers and by night transforms into a freelance author-illustrator. She is the illustrator for the indie-published middle grade advice book The Girls’ Q&A Book on Friendship by Annie Fox, and contributed over 40 fun stickers to The Future Is Ours: Feminist Stickers to Express Yourself by Duopress Labs. Her latest publication, a picture book, Mighty May Won’t Cry Today by Kendra and Claire-Voe Ocampo, is a National Indie Excellence Award finalist.
