To celebrate the new year, our first critique meet-up will feature a mystery editor!

Wednesday, January 25

7:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Registration will open on Wednesday, January 11 at 8:00 pm eastern. You need to be logged in to SCBWI to register for this FREE event.

Due to the limited number of critique slots, manuscript sharing is for SCBWI Ohio North members only. Once the 10 manuscript sharing slots fill, you’ll be able to register for the wait list; if there are cancellations, we’ll move people from the wait list to the manuscript sharing list.

Other SCBWI members are welcome to participate as critique observers and join in the Q&A with the Mystery Editor.

The critique meet-up is virtual and will take place via Zoom. You will receive the meeting invitation the day before the event (and a reminder just before the meeting).

What the Mystery Editor Will Critique (and What the Mystery Editor is Looking For)

The Mystery Editor is willing to provide feedback on picture books (PB), middle grade (MG), and young adult (YA). The Mystery Editor would not feel comfortable critiquing chapter books.

The Mystery Editor is specifically interested in acquiring fresh-feeling contemporary novel manuscripts, magic realism that draws from non-European traditions, and picture book manuscripts with Spanish translation potential.

Hints About the Mystery Editor

Clue #1: The Mystery Editor took two years off between high school and college to work as a professional ballet dancer.

Clue #2: The Mystery Editor speaks three languages: English, Spanish, and French.

Clue #3: The Mystery Editor is the direct descendant of Andrés Molina Enríquez, one of the framers of the Mexican Constitution.

Clue #4: The Mystery Editor’s dog is named after both a literary icon and a video game character.

How the Mystery Editor Critique Will Work:

The Mystery Editor will provide verbal feedback on 10 SCBWI Ohio North members‘ manuscripts from 7:00-9:00 pm.

After the feedback session, the mystery editor will participate in a 30-minute Q&A session with all SCBWI members registered for this event. Participants will have the opportunity to ask a question through the chat function; this session will be moderated by the SCBWI Ohio North Regional Team.

For Members Sharing Manuscripts with the Mystery Editor:

Each participant signed up to share will read their work aloud and be asked to share their manuscript on-screen so the Mystery Editor can read along.

You can share a picture book or pages from a longer work. There should be enough time to read an entire picture book manuscript (approx. 600 words) or 3-4 double-spaced pages from a longer work. The SCBWI Ohio North Regional Team will moderate if a piece is longer than what’s recommended for this event in an effort to keep the event on time for everyone.

Important note:

If you don’t see the registration form after 8:00pm ET on 1/11, try refreshing your browser (and make sure you are logged in).
